Do I need a SSL certificate for my site?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate adds that little padlock to the top of your screen that you may have noticed on banking websites.  The reason why it’s important is Google at the end of 2017 flags websites not encrypted with SSL as unsafe. The reason for this is Google loves uses and wants to ensure that it’s customers have the best safest user experience possible.

As of 2019, 93% of all website traffic is now encrypted with https so at the moment there is still a 7% Gap.

Benefits of using SSL

As stated Google is doing this for it’s customer base so the benefit for you to switch to using SSL is Google is going to favour websites that are coming through with a SSL certificate, so it’s extremely important for ranking of your blog posts, in fact I would say it is a must.

Can I get SSL for free?

The good news is cloudflare which is used by over 16 million domains world wide, offers various services in order to speed up your website, without needing to switch hosting providers. They also have a free plan for 1 domain, which will provide you with a free SSL certificate. And they are proud to be the first Internet platform security company to offer SSL protection absolutely free.

How do I add an SSL certificate to my website?

The following steps are required:

  • Sign up for Cloudflare.
  • Get your free plan and point your domain name servers to cloudflare.
  • Install Cloudflare WordPress plugin.
  • Install HTTPS Redirection WordPress Plugin.
  • Wait a couple of hours.
  • Completed.
