What is HEIC?
On the latest IOS update Apple has turned on HEIC (High Efficiency Image File Format) by default, it is a file format for individual images and image sequences, to reduce the size of your images and keeping the original quality intact.
These 4-steps are How to Convert heic to jpg on iphone Free:
- Download CopyTrans HEIC Free for Windows here.
- Install
- Right Click HEIC File and click Convert to JPEG with CopyTrans
- You will see your JPEG, you may delete you old HEIC file
How to Avoid HEIC files in future
To disable your iphone taking HEIC files in future to ensure always in JPEG do the following.
- Go to Settings
- Scroll to Camera
- Click Formats
- Change from High Efficiency to Most Compatible
You may with to keep using HEIC files
Since HEIC is now Native to Windows 10 (version 1803, build 17123) you may find that they do not open correctly, I found if you install the above program you can get windows to open HEIC natively.
Warning: You will still not be able to open in Photoshop without converting first.

Summary
I am sure in the future HEIC will become the default image format as they promise to give half the size or smaller compared to JPEG images, but with even better quality. But in the meantime I will be using JPEG until that format is fully established.
